Anyone traveling on Swiss roads today risks getting stuck in a traffic jam more than ever and arriving later than planned at their destination. This applies not only to private individuals but also to courier drivers transporting express shipments. The Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) has published relevant figures in the report “Traffic Development and Traffic Flow 2019.” In 2019, 27.8 billion vehicle kilometers were traveled on Swiss roads – about 100 million more than the previous year. Additionally, more than 30,230 hours of traffic jams were recorded, representing an increase of over 10% compared to the previous year. The most common cause (89%) of traffic jams is not accidents or construction sites, but rather the “overloading of the road network.” Experts therefore estimate that the Swiss national road network is increasingly reaching its capacity limits.<\/p>\n

Rising Costs for Express Deliveries on the Road<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Express deliveries in the B2B sector, such as laboratory samples, spare parts, medications, and important documents, must be delivered as quickly as possible. The recipient is already waiting for the courier with the urgent shipment, as subsequent processes are already planned and tightly scheduled. “For example, the patient is waiting for the results of their tissue sample, which should be analyzed immediately upon arrival at the laboratory,” explains Hauenstein.<\/p>\n

Delays due to traffic jams result in rising costs in several respects. The courier driver needs more time and fuel for the same route. Meanwhile, well-trained personnel and expensive analysis equipment in the laboratory are waiting for the delayed arrival of the courier driver. The economic damage caused by lost time is significant. A vehicle in a traffic jam emits more fuel and thus a larger amount of the harmful greenhouse gas CO2<\/sub>. This severely harms the environment and our health.<\/p>\n
