The innovative robotic warehouse of the FBI operates with AutoStore from Swisslog for the secure storage of their paper files. The General Services Administration, Mid-Atlantic Region (GSA), has installed the central archival warehouse for the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) in Winchester, Virginia. This setup includes, for the first time, a warehouse with robotic storage and retrieval.<\/p>\n

(BuchsAG, Switzerland\/Winchester, USA) In this secure, state-of-the-art facility of the FBI, documents are archived over more than 23,000 square meters that were previously housed at 256 locations around the world. The complex, which employs around 500 staff, also includes an office building, a visitor center, a guard station, and a parking lot.<\/p>\n

Certificate for 188 Kilometers of Files<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The National Archives complex is now certified for the official storage of 188 kilometers of paper files. Stacked up, these documents would currently reach halfway to the International Space Station (ISS).
“After an intensive comparison of several technologies, the project team chose the AutoStore storage solution <\/a>for automating the storage and retrieval processes. This system, with an extremely high density, eliminates aisles and utilizes all available space for storage. Radio-controlled robots move along an overarching grid system to retrieve the desired container from 360,000 storage bins,” says Dr. Christian Baur, CEO of Swisslog.<\/p>\n

Service Provider Does Not Know the Content of the Files<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The software tracks both file and container numbers, allowing the robots to operate safely without the service provider knowing anything about the content of the files. The energy consumption of 10 robots is comparable to that of a single vacuum cleaner. The high storage density in the system significantly reduces the space required for housing the files, saving costs and freeing up space for additional needs.
This technology saves time in locating and retrieving files, allowing employees to focus on higher-value activities. This project is just one example of the GSA delivering value and achieving savings in real estate, procurement technology, and other supporting services for the entire U.S. government.
