The federal government aims to further strengthen rail freight transport through the Alps. The Federal Office of Transport (BAV) is therefore participating in the construction of a large transshipment terminal east of Milan. A contribution of up to 66.3 million Swiss francs is planned for this purpose. This is not the first time that the federal government has supported a construction project abroad in the interest of Swiss relocation policy.<\/strong><\/h5>\n

(Bern\/Milan) Efficient transshipment facilities for combined transport are an important element of Swiss relocation policy. They allow containers and semi-trailers to be transferred to the rail. For several decades, the federal government has therefore supported the construction of such terminals under clearly defined conditions \u2013 also abroad, when such facilities serve Swiss relocation policy and would not otherwise be built. The Confederation has, among other things, participated in the financing of transshipment terminals in Gallarate, Piacenza, Duisburg, Singen, and Antwerp.<\/p>\n

Another major project is now set to be realized in the Milan metropolitan area: A terminal with two sets of six tracks, a total of six portal cranes, and a length of about 750 meters is to be built on a former marshalling yard east of Milan (“Milano Smistamento”). With this facility, around 150,000 truck consignments can be transferred to the rail each year \u2013 a significant portion of which has a destination north of the Swiss Alps. The operator is the company Teralp, in which the Swiss logistics company Hupac is involved.
\nThe BAV has assured Teralp a funding contribution of up to 66.3 million Swiss francs. This is subject to various conditions. Among other things, the company must achieve certain minimum volumes during transshipment for ten years. The funding comes from the framework credit for investment contributions to private freight transport facilities approved by Parliament. This amounts to a total of 300 million Swiss francs for the years 2021-2024.<\/p>\n
