The federal government has launched the consultation of the cantons regarding the traffic master plan, part “Underground Freight Transport.” This is another important step towards the privately financed project realization of Cargo sous terrain (CST). With CST, Switzerland will have a comprehensively connected overall logistics system starting in 2031, which will help improve the quality of life.<\/h5>\n

(Bern\/Basel) In a master plan, the federal government defines the guidelines for nationwide spatial planning projects. It is relevant for the cantons, as their authorities are obligated to implement it. The part “Underground Freight Transport” in the traffic master plan defines the foundations for the realization of Cargo sous terrain (CST). It shows how CST can be integrated into urban areas and landscapes. The Federal Office of Transport is conducting a consultation of the cantons in the first step. Later, the cantons will also involve the population and municipalities.<\/p>\n

What sounds technical is of paramount importance for the generational project CST: With the master plan, the first stage of a comprehensive approval process begins, which will ultimately enable the construction of the first section of the CST network from H\u00e4rkingen to Zurich Airport. The master plan shows the planning corridor for the tunnel alignment and other construction-related planning zones. A detailed environmental impact report is also part of the consultation documents. This ensures that natural resources such as landscapes, groundwater, and arable land are preserved. The foundations of CST include a committed sustainability strategy in favor of the environment and climate.<\/p>\n

Sustainable Improvement of Quality of Life<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The CST project creates a new supply and disposal infrastructure for the entire Switzerland to secure the quality of life for future generations. The privately financed goods and freight transport system relieves roads and railways, enables the development of integrated residential, working, and green zones, and thus supports the goals of municipalities and the public. With the new route for freight transport, CST also creates conditions for effective climate protection, as it enables the lowest CO2 transport scenario of the future. According to a recently conducted life cycle analysis, CST has a significantly lower environmental and climate impact than road transport, even in a future with new truck drive types.<\/p>\n

Close Coordination with Authorities<\/strong><\/h5>\n

CST stands for collaboration and has developed the previous planning in close coordination with authorities at all levels (federal, cantonal, and municipal). In particular, the cantons along the first section \u2013 Solothurn, Aargau, and Zurich \u2013 will now provide the federal government with their official statements on the submitted planning status before the Federal Council ultimately enacts a revised version of the master plan. Building on this, the project will be further refined within the framework of the cantonal development plans. Thus, CST remains in close communication with the authorities for further project development. All planning phases are accompanied by public dialogue events on various online and offline platforms, where CST informs about the project, seeks conversation, and addresses concerns.<\/p>\n
