Sinds de opening heeft de tunnel de noord-zuidverbindingen in Zwitserland en Europa, met name op de goederenvervoeras Genua-Rotterdam, aanzienlijk veranderd. Samen met de Ceneri-basistunnel, die in 2020 in gebruik werd genomen, en de L\u00f6tschberg-basistunnel vormt de GBT het centrale element van de Nieuwe Spoorweg-Alpentransversale (NEAT). De tunnel heeft normen gesteld op het gebied van innovatie, precisie en betrouwbaarheid en maakt een vlakker verloop door de Alpen mogelijk, wat bijdraagt aan een effici\u00ebnter verkeer.<\/p>\n<h3>Cijfers en feiten over de tunneloperatie<\/h3>\n<p>Sinds de opening zijn er meer dan 276.000 goederentreinen en 169.000 reizigerstreinen door de Gotthard-basistunnel gereden. Vincent Ducrot, CEO van de SBB, sprak ter gelegenheid van het tienjarig jubileum: \u201eVandaag wil ik iedereen bedanken die heeft bijgedragen aan de bouw van dit monumentale bouwwerk. De tunnel heeft het alpenquerende verkeer in de afgelopen tien jaar veranderd en de Europese noord-zuidas versterkt.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>De ingebruikname van de Ceneri-basistunnel heeft de verbinding tussen Noord- en Zuid-Europa verder verbeterd. De reistijden in Ticino zijn door de introductie van een nieuwe S-Bahn aanzienlijk verkort, zodat de rit van Z\u00fcrich naar Lugano nu minder dan twee uur duurt. De vraag naar personenvervoer op de Gotthard-as is bijna verdubbeld, en sinds bijna twee jaar rijdt er in beide richtingen elke 30 minuten een trein. De SBB past de capaciteiten indien nodig aan om te voldoen aan de verhoogde vraag, vooral tijdens feestdagen.<\/p>\n<h3>Effici\u00ebntie in het goederenvervoer<\/h3>\n<p>De NEAT heeft ook het goederenvervoer geoptimaliseerd door een vrijwel vlakke route onder de Alpen te bieden. Dit maakt snellere treinen met meer wagons en zwaardere ladingen mogelijk in vergelijking met de oude bergroute. Het transportvolume op de Gotthard-as is gestegen, en de verschuiving van goederenvervoer van de weg naar het spoor wordt bevorderd. Toch is er nog ontwikkelingspotentieel, aangezien momenteel slechts een deel van de capaciteit wordt benut. Het volledig benutten van de capaciteiten is cruciaal om de verkeersverschuiving te intensiveren en het wegverkeer te ontlasten.<\/p>\n<p>De historische bergroute van 1882 blijft ook van belang, omdat deze regionale verbindingen waarborgt. Dagelijks maken ongeveer 1.400 reizigers gebruik van de \u201eTreni Gottardo\u201c van de S\u00fcdostbahn (SOB). Deze panoramaroute biedt niet alleen een alternatieve route bij afsluitingen van de Gotthard-basistunnel, maar ook een toeristische attractie die kan worden verkend met de Gotthard Panorama Express.<\/p>\n<h3>Investeringen in de infrastructuur<\/h3>\n<p>Om de prestaties van de Gotthard-basistunnel te waarborgen, investeert de SBB jaarlijks ongeveer 35 miljoen frank in onderhoud. Het hoge verkeersvolume leidt tot remslijtage en slijtagegerelateerde metaalafzettingen, die met robotgestuurde reinigingssystemen worden verwijderd. Bovendien monitort de SBB de sporen en installaties continu met hoogprecisie meetinstrumenten. Naast nachtelijke onderhoudswerkzaamheden elk weekend zijn ook langere werktijden nodig, bijvoorbeeld voor de tunnelfrequentie, die tot 2027 moet worden vervangen.
