In 2021, employees of Swiss Post processed 202.1 million packages. This is a record in the history of the Post. Compared to the previous year, this is an increase of 9.6 percent. The decline in letter volumes continued in 2021.
(Bern) Even in the second year of the pandemic, the volume of packages continued to rise. The reasons for the significant increase are the booming online trade, driven by COVID-19 restrictions and remote work. In 2021, employees of the Post processed 202.1 million packages in sorting centers and delivered them to all corners of Switzerland and abroad. This is another 9.6 percent more packages than in the first year of the pandemic (2020: 184.4 million packages). Compared to 2019, this is even about 35 percent more packages. For the first time in its history, the Post has processed more than 200 million packages within a year – an achievement that was ultimately made possible only through foresighted planning and the tireless efforts of Post employees throughout Switzerland.
Letter Volumes Continue to Decline
Although the number of letters sent has been declining for years, postal workers processed an impressive 1.811 billion addressed letter shipments in 2021. This is a decrease of 3.3 percent compared to the previous year (2020: 1.873 billion). Over the past 10 years, letter volumes have decreased by about 30 percent overall.

More packages and fewer letters in the past year. These developments confirm the necessity of the Post’s decision to organizationally merge letter and package processing at the beginning of 2021. The merger of the letter and package business into one logistics area secures jobs and also guarantees flexibility in extraordinary times: Last year, the Post sorted up to 200,000 small packages daily in the letter centers. Meanwhile, letter carriers deliver about half of all packages. Not least, the Post was able to create 809 new full-time positions in the merged logistics area alone last year and offer employees more diverse perspectives.
Approximately 1.5 Billion Swiss Francs Invested in Infrastructure
The Post also expects package volumes to continue to rise in the future. Accordingly, it continues to invest in its logistics: The goal is to double sorting capacities by 2030. Specifically, the Post will invest around 1.5 billion Swiss Francs in its sorting and delivery infrastructure by 2030. This includes the expansion and modernization of existing centers, as well as the construction of additional regional package centers. Through these investments, the Post secures existing jobs and is expected to create around 1,500 additional positions by 2030.
