Jun 24, 2025 at 6:41 PMRhenus Alpina looks back on a positive business year 2024 despite a challenging market environment. The logistics specialist generated a total revenue of 448 million CHF in Switzerland. By realizing new infrastructure projects, it lays the foundation for a sustainable future.
(Basel) Rhenus Alpina was able to achieve its ambitious budget goals in the past financial year. Despite declining transport volumes and decreasing margins in the market, the logistics specialist generated total revenue of 448 million CHF in 2024. Compared to the previous year, the result increased by 14 million CHF.
“Our logistics facilities were well utilized last year,” says Andreas Stöckli, CEO of Rhenus Alpina. However, especially in the second half of the year, economic uncertainty was noticeably felt among Rhenus Alpina’s customers. In the summer of 2024, Rhenus Port Logistics put the new trimodal handling terminal 4 into operation at the Rhine port in Kleinhüningen. The photovoltaic system installed on the roof generates the entire annual electricity demand for Rhenus Port Logistics. Additionally, after about one and a half years, Rhenus Logistics will open its new logistics center in Möhlin (AG) in January 2025. This center will be powered exclusively by green electricity, thus also making an important contribution to the company’s sustainable future. Currently, Rhenus Alpina employs 1,550 staff in Switzerland across various business areas. As of June 20, 2025, Hanspeter Weber will join the board of directors of Rhenus Alpina. He has been intensively involved in the further development of Rhenus Logistics for over 20 years.
Rhenus Alpina looks optimistically to the future. Despite the continued strength of the Swiss franc and above-average investments in various construction projects, the logistics specialist expects a continued positive development in 2025.
Rhenus Logistics
In 2024, Rhenus Logistics was able to improve its productivity in order processing thanks to a good customer mix and the introduction of pick automation. Nevertheless, total revenue slightly decreased compared to the previous year. This decline is primarily due to a market environment characterized by a weakening economy, especially in the EU region.
In 2025, Rhenus Logistics aims to drive growth in the Warehouse Solutions sector through the introduction of further automation solutions. The new logistics center in Möhlin (AG), which went into operation in January 2025, is also expected to make a significant contribution to positive development. According to current knowledge, the modern new building is already 90 percent utilized by the end of the year.
Despite a volatile global economic situation and various conflicts around the world, Rhenus Logistics is optimistic about continuing to operate successfully in the market.
Cargologic
Cargologic impressed in 2024 with good handling figures and results. Overall, freight volumes increased, with Cargologic particularly recording more air freight. This is due to various reasons. Among other things, part of the goods had to be transported by air over the Red Sea to avoid potential attacks from Houthi rebels. Additionally, import volumes from China increased significantly. For 2025, Cargologic expects a slight decline in handling volumes due to global economic developments and political uncertainties. Nevertheless, Andreas Stöckli, CEO of Rhenus Alpina, looks optimistically to the future: “We are well positioned and expect that, thanks to advances in digitalization and a new control computer, we can achieve significant qualitative improvements in the SDG area that will benefit our customers.”
Rhenus Port Logistics
Rhenus Port Logistics concluded the year 2024 very positively. Among other things, it was able to handle around 25 percent more imported grain and feed in the fourth quarter due to poor domestic harvests compared to the previous year.
In recent years, the necessary infrastructure has been continuously developed. Particularly noteworthy is the new trimodal handling terminal 4 at the Rhine port in Kleinhüningen. Since its opening in the fall of 2024, goods have been handled efficiently and environmentally friendly here. The photovoltaic system installed on the roof is the largest of its kind in the city of Basel. “We are proud to set a sign for sustainability in the region with this project,” says Andreas Stöckli, CEO of Rhenus Alpina.
Contargo
In 2024, Contargo’s business developed relatively steadily. Additionally, the customer base was expanded.
In June 2024, flooding led to an eleven-day closure of certain sections of the Rhine, significantly disrupting operations in the barge sector. Furthermore, there were restrictions on the railway line at Rastatt in August 2024 due to planned construction work. Transport was able to continue during this time via an alternative Rhine route. The significantly increased barge volumes were successfully handled through the Contargo terminal.
To optimally manage any potential peaks in the future, Contargo is continuously developing its infrastructure. Among other things, the new container terminal Nordquai 2 is set to begin operations between the end of 2025 and mid-2026.
