Mar 17, 2026 at 2:11 PMThe MSC Group, headquartered in Geneva, has signed a 45-year concession agreement with Nigerdock to develop a modern container terminal at Snake Island Port (SIP) in Lagos. Additionally, a contract for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) has been concluded with ITB Nigeria Ltd. and the Belgian DEME Group. The project is part of the company’s investments in infrastructure and logistics in Nigeria, totaling over $1 billion.
The planned terminal will feature a 910-meter-long quay equipped with Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes as well as mobile harbor cranes (MHC). This infrastructure will be designed for both ocean-going vessels and barges. The design includes an initial dredging depth of -16.5 meters Chart Datum (CD), which aligns with the existing depth of the fairway. Furthermore, an area of 30 hectares is planned for Hybrid Rubber Tired Gantries (RTG), with options for expansion.
The design of the terminal reflects the MSC Group’s confidence in Nigeria’s central role in the region and takes into account the country’s growing status as a significant shipping hub. The terminal design is scalable and allows for a final depth of -18 meters CD to accommodate larger vessels.
Diego Aponte, President of the MSC Group, stated: „The completion of this important phase in the development of the Snake Island Container Terminal with Nigerdock and our trusted partners demonstrates the MSC Group’s commitment to providing excellent service to our customers in Nigeria and across Africa. The new terminal will create opportunities, enhance efficiency, and elevate Snake Island Port to a significant global shipping center. Together with our other long-term investments in Nigeria, this will create numerous local jobs and significantly boost economic revenues and resilience.“
