Zimex Aviation takes over special Twin Otter
Jun 29, 2026 at 8:51 AMThe EuroAirport is unique, as over 70 percent of the export cargo consists of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. This specialization is the result of decades of development, supported by the proximity to major pharmaceutical companies such as Roche, Novartis, and Lonza. Swissport, the leading cargo service provider, has established a cargo terminal with 7,500 square meters of temperature-controlled space and plans to expand by 800 square meters by 2025.
In contrast to large European hubs, Basel focuses on specialized processes and close collaboration with pharmaceutical companies. Swissport utilizes a pharma bypass to optimize logistics and ensure product safety. The new „cool+connect“ concept, which will be introduced in 2024, consolidates shipments and reduces transport routes to lower CO2 emissions.
Geopolitical uncertainties have impacted the supply chains of the pharmaceutical industry; however, the demand for high-quality transport remains stable due to new therapies and an aging population. Swissport views the EuroAirport as a central location factor and calls for stable framework conditions as well as better utilization of the binational potential. In the long term, the specialization in pharmaceuticals is to be further expanded, and the attractiveness of the location strengthened.
