Fnac, Europe’s market leader in the distribution of entertainment products, has opened a modern omnichannel distribution center in Lisbon in collaboration with Ferag. Following a successful first project in Madrid, Ferag was once again appointed as the general contractor. Operations commenced at the end of 2023.
(Hinwil/Lisbon) The new facility optimizes both B2B and B2C processes and addresses previous space and efficiency issues. Previously, manual and semi-automated areas were separate, complicating operations. Ferag’s solution integrates state-of-the-art technologies, including TGW’s Stingray Shuttle System, Interroll conveyor systems, and Sealed Air’s I-Pack® packaging system. Software integration at the MFC and WCS levels was also carried out by Ferag.
Optimization of Logistics Processes
In the B2B sector, the center supplies all 46 Fnac stores in Portugal. The SKUs are transported in containers via conveyor belts to the ferag.denisort facility, which sorts orders for 302 destination stations. The shuttle system serves as a buffer until the containers are released for shipping in the correct order. Fully automated stackers label and stack the containers for efficient truck loading. Six to seven trucks leave the center daily, with a capacity of up to 700 containers per hour.
In the B2C sector, online orders are packaged in standardized boxes to reduce volume and costs. The I-Pack packaging machine optimizes box formats, reduces manual effort, and lowers shipping costs. The buffer system also manages returns, further enhancing efficiency.
Sustainable Logistics Solution for the Future
Thanks to Ferag’s integration, productivity has improved significantly – labeling is now five times more efficient than before. The shuttle buffer maximizes space utilization and creates expansion opportunities for future growth.
