With Swisstrans to the Gala of the Logistics Hall of Fame
Jun 11, 2026 at 3:00 PMA few days before the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, representatives of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA), the Swiss Army, and the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) presented the security measures for the upcoming meeting together with the cantonal authorities in Geneva. The summit, which will take place from June 15 to 17, 2026, is organized by France. Federal President Guy Parmelin will welcome the heads of state and government of the participating countries in Geneva.
Security Precautions and Military Support
Ambassador Alain Gaschen, the Federal Council’s delegate for the G7 summit, emphasized during a press conference on June 11, 2026, the common objective of Switzerland and France: the safe and successful conduct of the summit. He highlighted the importance of this dialogue platform in an increasingly conflict-ridden world and underscored Geneva’s role as an accessible multilateral platform for dialogue.
As part of the security measures, the Swiss Army will support the cantons of Geneva, Vaud, and Valais with around 4,000 soldiers in assistance service. This deployment aims to relieve the civil security authorities and provide the cantonal authorities with additional capacities in the areas of protecting sensitive infrastructures, surveillance, reconnaissance, and logistics. Furthermore, the army will provide specialized support in areas such as air superiority, air transport, cybersecurity, and CBRN protection.
Reintroduction of Border Controls
At the beginning of May, the Federal Council approved the temporary reintroduction of border controls at the internal borders of the Schengen area with France. This measure allows for the reinforcement of controls depending on the evolving situation and risks. The Geneva police have requested the closure of several border crossings. Regardless of the internal border controls, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex will support the BAZG in the controls at the Schengen external borders at Geneva Airport to free up additional resources for the controls at the national borders.
The close cooperation between the cantonal authorities and the affected federal agencies, including the EDA, the Federal Office of Police, the State Secretariat for Security Policy, the Swiss Army, the Federal Office for Cybersecurity, the Federal Intelligence Service, and the BAZG, was highlighted by Ambassador Gaschen. He pointed out that the federal government covers 80 percent of the security costs for the cantons of Geneva, Vaud, and Valais.
Reception of Delegations in Geneva
The G7 summit will take place in Évian-les-Bains in Haute-Savoie. Although Switzerland is not officially invited to the summit, Federal President Guy Parmelin is expected to participate in some events related to the summit. The reception of the delegations in Geneva will play a central role in the conduct of the summit and further strengthen the diplomatic relations between the participating countries.
