Media Markt Switzerland expands vehicle fleet
Dec 19, 2025 at 10:18 AMBirsterminal AG is currently handling a major project on behalf of the Swiss manufacturer of high-voltage cables, Brugg Kabel AG, with a total of 37 cable reels in 4 sections from the Rhine port of Birsfelden to a German seaport in Lower Saxony. The high-voltage cables are intended for grid expansion there as part of increasing security of supply and expanding capacities for the settlement of other energy producers, such as electrolysis plants for the production of green hydrogen.
(Birsfelden) The Lower Saxony region is a particularly important connection point for wind energy – both onshore and offshore. Numerous plants for the generation of renewable energies are already operated there. Further expansion is expected in the coming years. In addition, the northwest of Lower Saxony is to be developed into a model region for climate-friendly further development of industry.
The cable reels with a diameter of 440 cm and a width of 361 cm and a gross weight of 25-30 tons are delivered by truck from the factory in Brugg/AG in Birsfelden, where they are mounted on specially designed wooden bases and temporarily parked for the purpose of consolidation. The forwarding of the shipment parts of 9 or 10 cable reels each is then carried out by inland waterway vessel, the most ecologically sustainable mode of transport.
Empty cable reels go back the same way
Once in Lower Saxony, the cable reels are again taken to interim storage and from there picked up sequentially by truck for the “last mile” and the cable is placed in the ground on the construction site. The empty steel rolls then go back to the port, where they then start their return journey by inland waterway vessel via Birsfelden to Brugg/AG and the steel rolls are reused, thus also making the manufacturer’s contribution to sustainability.
