Apr 30, 2026 at 1:04 PMThe Federal Office of Transport (BAV) has published the current status report on the expansion of the rail network in Switzerland. The report documents the progress of all approved expansion programs until December 31, 2025. Currently, around 300 projects are planned or underway as part of the expansion phases 2025 and 2035, as well as the ZEB program (Future Development of Rail Infrastructure), according to the BAV.
Progress in rail expansion
In 2025, significant progress was made in the expansion of the rail network, according to the BAV. The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) put the double-track expansion between Grellingen and Duggingen into operation on schedule. This measure represents the first major infrastructure project of the 2035 expansion phase and led to an increase in service frequency in the Laufental region with the timetable change in December. Furthermore, additional expansion measures were implemented in the Basel area. The four-track expansion in Liestal was completed, enabling a 15-minute interval on the S-Bahn line Basel–Liestal since December 2025.
In Eastern Switzerland, the BAV reports that the distances on the Pfäffikon SZ–Altendorf route have been shortened. Additionally, a passing track for freight traffic has been put into operation, allowing for a continuous half-hour interval for intercity trains between Zurich and Chur.
